Prebens-100-days

Preben’s First 100 Days at Friday

Preben Breivik Ihle is a broker who recently completed his first 100 days at Friday & Co. Shipbrokers after earning a spot on the team during Friday’s Fishing Expedition recruitment day. Here, we get to know him a little better.

As we sit in the Friday office bright and early on a winter morning, Preben says, “I’m very happy to be here. I come to the office every single day. I enjoy being here, and I don’t want to miss a day.”

Making Connections

During the onboarding training programme at Friday, alongside the weekly tasks, new brokers are also encouraged to connect with other brokers and shipowners.

“I was surprised by how welcoming the shipowners were. I called them up and said, ‘Hi, I’m the new Norwegian in the office.’ It was easier to connect than I expected. Now, I have to maintain those connections to stay up to date with what’s happening, especially in the North European market. I’m learning that some shipowners really value their ships and take great care of them.”

The Art of Negotiation

Preben is also learning the art of negotiation from his colleagues. “We have a unique office environment at Friday. There are always negotiations happening, and I love learning how it all works. I’m listening, observing, and taking it all in.

I was even part of a negotiation recently…that’s exciting! I’m realising that not all negotiations end in a deal, but the learning process, searching for and proposing vessels, communicating, and serving your client well, that is the best part.”

The Social Side of Shipping

“A lot goes on in shipping. Every week, there’s an opportunity to attend an event, party, conference, or exhibition. I recently attended events organised by the KVNR and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, and I try to make it to the LINK Maritime drinks for young shipping professionals in Rotterdam every month.”

What’s Next?

“Together with my fellow Fishing Expedition winner, Jesper, I will attend the BIMCO Summer School in Copenhagen in June. We are looking forward to meeting new friends there. But before then, I’m focused on expanding my knowledge, keeping up with the market, and being ready for the next negotiation.”

Three Words

The first three words that come to Preben’s mind to describe the last few months?
“Fun. Challenging. Educational. I’m just really glad I applied for the Friday Fishing Expedition!”
